SUPPORT US

For 60 years the Canberra Theatre Centre has been the premier presenter of performing arts in the region and continues to play a major role in fostering the performing arts industry, both locally in Canberra and across Australia.

Our New Works program supports local artists and producers in commissioning, creative development and presentation of live performances. The program connects local performing artists to a national network of live performance makers through mentorship and collaborative opportunities. New Works also supports artists to leverage their involvement with the CTC for future projects and collaborations.

The Canberra Theatre Centre also has a world class theatre Education Program engaging children and students right across Canberra and the region. Theatre experiences provide a world of benefits for children and students, encouraging creativity, confidence, and empathy. We know that exposure to the theatre while young, and especially before the age of 8, promotes attendance at the theatre as an adult, extending the cycle of creative expression and support for the performing arts.

EDUCATION

The Canberra Theatre Centre has a world class theatre education program reaching children and students right across Canberra and the region. We offer Australian made theatre learning experiences that specialise in First Nations stories, cross disciplinary art forms and literary adaptations. Our programs are designed to align with the Australian curriculum, supporting teachers to maximise theatre engagement. In the 2023-24 financial year, 10,960 schoolchildren engaged with the Canberra Theatre.

The CTC also presents a considered program of works for young audiences and schools. We invite children into our spaces to immerse themselves in a world of high-level collaboration and creative thinking and they leave with their imaginations open to a world of possibilities.

Exposure to the performing arts provides a world of benefits for children and students, encouraging creativity, confidence, and empathy. We know that going to the theatre while young, and especially before the age of eight, promotes attendance at the theatre as an adult, extending support for creative expression and the performing arts.

NEW WORKS

New Works results in excellent, vibrant, and dynamic new performances made in Canberra, and establishes a reputation for the ACT as a site for making live performance work of national significance that includes meaningful engagement with ACT artists. In 2023/24 the New Works program supported 23 works and engaged with 239 artists and arts workers.

New Works supports local artists and producers in commissioning, creative development and presentation of live performances. The program connects local performing artists to a national network of live performance makers through mentorship and collaborative opportunities. New Works also supports artists to leverage their involvement with the CTC for future projects and collaborations.

At least 60% of artists employed as part of the New Works program live and work in the ACT. Artists from outside the region are also employed so that ACT-based artists are connected to a national network of practice, helping to build sustainable careers for our local artists. Many pieces supported by the New Works program have gone on to be performed locally, nationally and internationally.
