What We Offer
We welcome students and educators to Canberra Theatre Centre!
At Canberra Theatre Centre (CTC), we are excited to support local and interstate students to have the best experience possible of Australian-made theatre. We invite schools into our space to immerse themselves in the world of high-level collaboration and creative thinking, and to have them leave with their imaginations open to a world of possibilities.
Our Education team are experienced teachers, technicians and theatre professionals and we love to support local schools to have amazing learning experiences and fun excursions! Whether you’re creating a whole unit of work around your excursion for an impactful learning opportunity or rewarding your students with a fun activity – our team can help you find the right experience to suit your class or schools’ needs.
Our Education season is a series of shows, workshops and Professional Learning activity that Canberra Theatre Centre programs for local and visiting students and teachers (from ELC to Tertiary).
EDUCATION CURRICULUM FOCUS
Our programming for education supports learning areas in The Arts, and often supports other learning areas such as English and Social Sciences, as well as general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities. We do this by creating learning connections through:
- Literacy; with many of our experiences bringing to life popular children’s literature,
- Learning through a First Nations lens,
- Engagement experiences for your students and pre/post excursion resources and lesson plans so that their trip to the theatre is embedded in their learning,
- Programming genres that support learning areas including Theatre and Literary Adaptations, Music, Dance, Circus, and multi-disciplinary arts.
RESOURCES TO SUPPORT YOUR LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
Our Education Season shows come with teacher learning resources. These resources can help educators develop lesson plans, assessment tasks and whole units of work that support an excursion to the theatre. The resources supplied are developed by Education experts who support national theatre companies, or often by practising educators with relevant expertise.
All education resources are aligned with relevant curriculum, including:
– Early Years Learning Framework
– Australian Curriculum F – 10
– ACT BSSS subjects
– NSW HSC subjects
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING ACCREDITATION
Canberra Theatre Centre annually applies to the relevant statutory bodies for accreditation of professional learning hours through our education programs. Approved programs will be listed on our education website with logo of the approving body and the number of approved hours.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENT PARTICIPATION ON OUR STAGES
CTC regularly hosts major student events, and facilitates several learning programs for students. These programs are designed to connect students with the opportunity to perform in our venue, meet professional arts workers and technicians, and to have a memorable and confidence boosting experience on the stage – whether they’re a seasoned performer or entering our doors for the very first time. Regular learning programs include:
– Class Clowns
Offered by Canberra Comedy Festival, in partnership with Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Held annually during the Canberra Comedy Festival.
– ACT UP!
A student fringe showcase produced by Canberra Theatre Centre, where students can showcase their own short works as part of in school assessments.
Participation includes access to artist workshops and teacher PL, technical rehearsals at the Canberra Theatre, tickets to a show and access to online streamed performances, access to conversations regarding career pathways with universities and local industry professionals, development of student performance, design and stage management skills, and access to perform on the stage of the nationally renowned Playhouse Theatre. How To Book Your Tickets
All school bookings are made through our school bookings form. Click on the link below to select the show you’d like to book. Once you’ve filled out the form, you will hear from our box office team to confirm your tickets.
Some tips:
– Age recommendations are in the context of educational excursions. General public bookings may provide broader age recommendations.
– Get pre-approval from your school admin team for your excursion before you make your booking.
– Make sure you have enough adults (you’ll need 1 teacher / supervising adult per 15 students).
– Book as early as possible, as school bookings fill up fast!.

Performance Warnings
Canberra Theatre Centre makes every effort to communicate performance warnings through marketing, website information and at the time of booking at the Box Office. Unlike movies, theatrical performances do not have imposed age limits for adult content. It is up to the teacher to make judgements about age appropriateness. If you have any concerns, please ask at the time of booking.
Plan Your Visit
Parking
Coaches and buses can park on London Circuit at the front of Civic Square, between the Legislative Assembly and Canberra Museum and Gallery (see map below). This will enable school groups to walk to the Canberra Theatre Centre without the need to cross any roads. Smaller buses, vans and private cars can use public metered parking on either side of the theatre.
Arrive Early
We recommend you arrive at least half an hour before the advertised performance start time in order to locate your seats and make use of the venue’s facilities. Schools will be seated in order of arrival. Latecomers should call the Box Office on 6275 2700. We will endeavour to admit your group into the auditorium at a suitable break in the performance but in some cases this may not be an option.
School Bags
School bags are not permitted in the auditorium. A free cloaking service is provided to look after your items, but it is much easier if large items such as school bags are left on the bus.
Lunch
Food and drink are permitted in the foyers but cannot be consumed in the auditorium. Packed lunches can be eaten on the steps leading up to the theatre, in Civic Square, or at Glebe Park.
School Visits Risk Assessment
