The Band of the Royal Military College

The Australian Army Band of the Royal Military College – Duntroon perform their concert at Llewellyn Hall, Australian National University, Canberra as part of the Masterworks for Winds. The Band of the Royal Military College – Duntroon performed a concert in their 2024 Masterworks for Winds series on Saturday (28 October) to an appreciative Canberra crowd, raising valuable funds for Legacy and continuing to build on their enduring relationship with the Australian National University (ANU) School of Music.
The Band of the Royal Military College, Duntroon strives to enhance the image of the Australian Army through community and military engagement. The RMC Band provides musical support and entertainment to Army activities at the Royal Military College, Government House and Parliament House as well as supplying support to exercises and deployments within the Australian Defence Force. As well as defence commitments, The RMC Band continues to contribute to the Canberra community by providing support to local charities through community concerts and school music education programs.
Community engagement is an important role within the RMC Band. The band regularly performs at the Canberra Theatre Centre with the popular Music at Midday series. Music at Midday has been proudly running for over 30 years, supporting local charities such as Make a Wish Foundation, The Cancer Council ACT, Camp Quality, The Salvation Army and many more. Performing at ANU’s Llewellyn Hall in the Masterworks for Winds series is a bi-annual highlight for the band, with all proceeds supporting Legacy Australia.

Functioning mainly as a Marching Band and Symphonic Wind Band, the band also performs in a variety of ensembles to cater for all tasking requirements. When the band isn’t providing ceremonial music on the parade ground, you will often find the Rock Band on stage at festivals such as Enlighten and Skyfire, the Woodwind Quintet providing background music at Government House events and the Pep Band entertaining crowds at The Canberra Show and roaming the Floriade grounds. Some of the many ensembles include Big Band, Jazz Ensemble, Rock Band, Brass Quintet, Woodwind Quintet and Acoustic Duo.
The RMC Band remains an integral and valuable asset to the Australian Defence Force and has been supporting the Canberra community and surrounds for over 100 years. Since 1916, the requirement for an Army band in Canberra was realised and a part-time band was formed at The Royal Military College, consisting of volunteers drawn from the riding staff. The Band of the Royal Military College, Duntroon was officially established in 1954, joining the Australian Army Band Corps officially in 1968.
